Australian Wine Vintages 2012 by Robert Geddes MW

Rob Geddes MW, author of Australian Wine Vintages

Now in its 29th edition, Rob Geddes must be praised for his dedication to providing Australia’s wine-drinking public with up-to-date detailed information on what wines to buy, drink now and cellar.

There is an absolutely huge world of wine out there that is overwhelming even to the most experienced of wine professionals (which I am not, but luckily Mr Geddes MW is), and in this book Geddes once again shares his knowledge with us in the ever popular ‘Gold Book’ as Australian Wine Vintages has become affectionately known.

Delve inside this 2012 guide and you’ll find a world of wine knowledge. Inside you won’t find every wine ever made, but those from Australia and New Zealand that are worth seeking out whether it be from the fine wine section of your local liquor barn or (and this option is much more enjoyable and rewarding), direct from the winemaker’s cellar door giving you the perfect excuse for a spring roadtrip.

When investing in wine, the most important question is: when do I drink it? Open a bottle too soon and you’ll find yourself faced with too sharp acids and too harsh tannins. Open a bottle past its prime and you’ll be left with dulled aromas and washed out flavours. Geddes book therefore instructs you on the correct year of drinking, sending some of us fleeing to our cellars to rescue some forgotten favourites and reminding us to leave others alone for a special occasion in five or more years to come.

In the rear section of the book Geddes extols the virtue of regional travel. It is so important as a wine lover to leave your home and see the vines from which your favourites wines have come, to crumble the earth in your hand, feel the warm sun on your face and listen to the quiet wind blowing through the vineyards – only then does wine become more than a drink but rather the expression of the living, breathing environment from which it came.

Across Australia we are blessed with some of the finest wine growing regions in the world. Separated by short distances you can go from tasting the finest cool climate pinot noirs and chardonnays to the richest of bold, warm climate shiraz and cabernets and all along the way you are sure to find genuine country hospitality and fine regional dining.

As a member of the RACV, NRMA, RACT, RAA or other state or national motoring body, you can now enjoy discounts of up to 20 per cent at select cellar doors across Victoria and Tasmania (with more states being added soon), so pick up a copy of the 2012 gold book, pack your motoring club members card and head out into the wine regions of Australia.

Australian Wine Vintages, 29th Edition 2012 by Rob Geddes MW is published by Geddes a Drink Publishing Pty Ltd, RRP A$34.95 and is available from local bookshops or online at
