Located on the north facing slopes of the Whicher Range, a 20 km drive south of Busselton in the South West region of Western Australia, Whicher Ridge Wines is fast making quite a name for itself.

In 2014 the winery was awarded a 5 star rating along with being named as one of ten Dark Horse wineries in the prestigious 2015 James Halliday Australian Wine Companion. Wineries that are rated as 5 Star by Halliday are regarded as being “outstanding and capable of producing wines of very high quality”, and a Dark Horse Winery is one that “has excelled over the past 12 months, has that little bit extra and has achieved a 5 Star rating for the first time”.

James Halliday states “The quality (and value) of the wines produced by the husband and wife team of viticulturist Neil and winemaker Cathy Howard is quite exceptional. When you factor in their collective 40+ years’ experience, their 7ha estate vineyards, and the purchase of high quality grapes from Frankland River, it begins to make sense”.

Whicher Ridge Wines is a genuine boutique wine producer, and owners Cat Howard use hands on, traditional winemaking techniques to handcraft small quantities of single variety, single vineyard, single region wines on site in their fully equipped winery. The Whicher Ridge wines are from three Western Australian wine regions: Margaret River, Geographe and Frankland River.

The Frankland River Riesling is a dry, textured style fermented cool in tank with a small percentage of light lees. The Geographe sauvignon blanc and Geographe Viognier are both partial barrel fermented and aged on lees for 12 months. The Margaret River chardonnay is 100% barrel fermented and also aged on lees for 12 months with regular bâttonage. The Frankland River shiraz and our flagship wine, the Elevation cabernet sauvignon are worked in small open fermenters and basket pressed before going into oak barrels for 2 years. A sparkling Shiraz, Redtail, is offered exclusively at Cellar Door, and is made following traditional methods with two years barrel maturation followed by a further 2 years on tirage on yeast lees in bottle prior to disgorging and release.

A Wine tasting experience at Whicher Ridge is truly memorable with its combination of a farm style Cellar Door and a Wine Sensory Garden. Visitors will experience a tasting with Cathy, a winemaker with over 20 years of winemaking experience.

The Cellar Door building is nestled between the winery and the vineyard so visitors can enjoy wine tasting while looking out onto the grapevines and the wine sensory garden. A short vineyard and winery tour can be arranged by booking a day or two ahead, and will make a wine tasting experience even more memorable.

Access to the large, native farmhouse garden is also open to visitors. Visitors are very welcome to BYO a picnic lunch, choose an outdoor table setting, and enjoy a glass of Whicher Ridge Wines with lunch while looking out over peaceful rural surroundings.

The Whicher Ridge Cellar Door and Wine Sensory Garden is open 5 days a week, from Thursday to Monday, from 10am to 5pm.
