Anna Gare is a familiar and friendly face on Australian television. Her credits include Junior Masterchef and the Great Australian Bake Off. Behind Anna’s onscreen presence are her more humble roots as one of Western Australia’s most hard-working and ultimately successful caterers.

Her experience of more than 15 years conveys not only a real understanding of food but an authentic love for it. Delicious Everyday is a showcase of what Anna does best: feeding delicious food to a crowd! Perfect for families and holiday entertaining. 

 Anna’s offerings include plenty of fresh vegetables and healthy grains with a focus on being largely, if not completely, gluten free. There are a vast collection of vibrant, flavour-packed salads and sensational soups spanning the seasons. The chapters on quick mid-week meals and one-pot wonders offer no-fuss nourishment and speedy kitchen clean up. Such a treat for a busy family!

And the two dessert chapters illustrate whilst there is a time and a place for restraint, there is indeed another for pure indulgence.

I tested out a few recipes, with great results. The Finnish Salmon Soup is both deceptively simple and decadently moreish.The creamy dill-flecked soup, made with potatoes and just a touch of cream, bathes sweet coral-fleshed salmon pieces in a delicate savouriness.

The Japanese Beef Salad is refreshingly light with subtle ginger and sesame flavours. Suddenly fashionable cauliflower shines brightly with citrus and fresh herbs, and earthy spiced flavours in the Cauliflower Salad. It makes a great side at dinner time to whatever you fancy and is a great leftover lunch in its own right.

The Beef Rendang seemingly demands your attention in the form of “from scratch” preparations but heartily rewards your efforts with the most tender and beautifully spiced curry. An extra large batch of spice paste stashed in the freezer is a great shortcut to easily revisiting this dish as if it were an old friend.

Whilst there is plenty to choose from the dessert pages, it is hard to steer away from chocolate. The Mexican Spiced Chocolate Cake is a cake to bake when you want to celebrate! The Salty Toffee Chocolate Ganache topping is every bit as fabulous as each of its ingredients promises.

The Breaking Bad Flan is simple by design but as addictive as it’s pun-tacular name suggests. The Sugarless Berry Jelly offers a wonderfully satisfying wobbly and practically guilt-free dessert experience.

Most of the recipes are as approachable as Anna herself although some do insist on more attention to ingredients and preparation. The simplicity of ingredients demonstrates Anna’s flair for creatively combining flavours that really work. In this way it is family-friendly food especially for those seeking new and varied meal ideas and flavours.

Each dish, from the breakfast table through to the dinner table and the delightfully sweet periphery beyond, is presented as a visual feast.

The focus of this book is taking mostly familiar ingredients and flavours and combining them in new and exciting ways. It is a selection of inspirational but achievable recipes that will both expand and rejuvenate the repertoire of any good home cook.
