Rutherglen is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and is characterised by people who respect the traditions of the past and embrace new ideas for the future.

Diversity is at the heart of the region, with styles from Rhone blends, low alcohol wines, alternative varieties and Rutherglen’s own take on traditional varieties such as shiraz and cabernet.

Today’s wine consumers are seeking out new varieties and blends in ever-increasing numbers.  Rutherglen is perfectly placed to respond to this trend due to the foresight of their ancestors.

This day itinerary offers a good insight into a diverse region and all the styles on offer.

Stop 1 - Warrabilla

Start the day tasting quintessential examples of Rutherglen red wine at its best. Warrabilla, owned by Andrew and Carol Sutherland Smith, was established in 1991, with Andrew a fifth generation winemaker in Rutherglen. Warrabilla has built a formidable reputation, and Andrew’s considerable experience shines through in his wines, headed up by the reserve trio of durif, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz. The Warrabilla vineyard is spread over 18.5 ha in the Rutherglen region, expanding with the plantation of some riesling and zinfandel.

Stop 2 - Lake Moodemere Vineyards

McDonald’s Rd,
Tel: 02 6032 9449

A short drive down the road will land you at Lake Moodemere, one of the most picturesque cellar doors in Rutherglen. The complex is situated in a unique position high above Lake Moodemere, where you can take in the spectacular view of the brilliant sparkling water while enjoying these rich Rutherglen wines. The lakeside vineyard was first established in 1886, with sixth generation winemaker Michael Chambers and his wife Belinda opening their cellar door many, many years down the track, in March 1996. Since then, Michael has worked carefully to produce a range of quality table wines and has seen the rewards for his hard winning numerous medals.

Stop 3 - Buller Wines

Step outside of Lake Moodemere and you will soon spy the sign for the Bullers cellar door. Successive generations of the Buller family have kept stewardship over the business, with the Rutherglen Calliope vineyard founded in 1921 serving as the site for both the cellar door and the home of the family matriarch, Valerie Buller. Famous for producing delicious fortified wines and gutsy, full-bodied reds, the backbone of the Buller vineyard is Rutherglen shiraz. Outside of this, Buller also has plantings of rarer varieties such as mondeuse and cinsaut.

Stop 4 - Cofield Wines

The Cofield cellar door is conveniently located just a short stroll from your lunch destination. District veteran Max Cofield and his wife Karen and sons Damien, Ben and Andrew, have established a business quite different to most of those in Rutherglen. Rather than focus on fortified wines, Cofield Wines features a broad range of both white and red table wines. Cofield’s are especially known for their sparkling wines and in particular the Sparking Shiraz, which is acknowledged by the winery as their icon wine.

Stop 5 - Pfeiffer Wines

Finish the day at the homely cellar door of Pfeiffers and sample their luscious signature Topaques and Muscats. Ex-Lindemans fortified winemaker Chris Pfeiffer and his family occupy one of the historic wineries (built 1880) which abound in north-east Victoria. Drawing upon 32 ha of estate plantings, the range of wines on offer is greater than any other Rutherglen producer, and includes exotic offering such as auslese tokay, marsanne, gamay and pale dry flor fino.
