Victoria’s longest-running wine festival, Winery Walkabout, will return on 8 and 9 June 2019 to showcase the best of North-East Victoria’s celebrated wine and produce.

For more than 40 years, the annual walkabout feast has attracted wine lovers to the Rutherglen region over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. The 2019 event will feature 19 Rutherglen wineries with something to taste, sip and savour behind every cellar door.

Over two days, food and wine enthusiasts will have the chance to discover some of the region’s stand-out wines, including winter favourites,  Rutherglen Durif and Rutherglen Muscat.

Wine lovers with a thirst for knowledge will be delighted by the wide variety of learning opportunities including special back-vintage tastings, behind-the-scenes winery tours and guided one-on-one tastings with winemakers.

Warming winter eats will be on offer at wineries across the region. Must-try dishes over the weekend include farm-grown duck sausages (Jones Winery & Vineyard); prawn gyoza with homemade Thai dipping sauce (Andrew Buller Wines); woodfired pizzas (Valhalla Wines); and gourmet BBQ and burger bar (Cofield Wines). For a sweet treat, Rutherglen’s iconic fortifieds will be front and centre at Morris Wines’ baklava bar while Stanton & Killeen Wines will offer fresh crepes.

Some wineries will also host extra events across the weekend. Top picks include:

  • Sparkling Burgundy Breakfast at Cofield Wines (8 & 9 June, 9am-11am) – Rise and shine for Winery Walkabout’s original gourmet breakfast. Feast on three delicious courses among the barrels while enjoying a selection of matched Cofield wines. $75 per person. Bookings essential.

  • #RUTHERGLENONTHEROCKS at Thousand Pound Wine Bar & Store (8 June from 5pm) – Enjoy a range of Rutherglen wine cocktails along with some of the venue’s most popular dishes. Bookings not essential, but highly recommended.

  • Lakeside Brunch at Lake Moodemere Estate (10 June from 9am) – Finish off the long weekend and recover by building your own brunch creation from the Estate’s Lakeside Restaurant. Bookings essential.

Festivities will carry on throughout the region with the Rutherglen Farmers’ Market (Sunday 9 June, 9am-12pm) and the Rutherglen Rotary Country Fair (Sunday 9 June, 9am–3pm). Meet the producers behind the region’s celebrated produce and stock up on some local goodies before strolling along Main Street to grab a bargain from more than 300 market stalls. There will also be live music and activities for the whole family to enjoy.

Weekend Winery Walkabout tickets start from $65 per person for both days (up until 31 May.$80 thereafter). Festival tickets include access to each of the 19 wineries. Designated drivers will receive complimentary festival entrance and two tea/coffee/soft drink vouchers provided by event sponsors TAC.

Visitors can explore the region with ease. Be chauffeured from one cellar door to the next by TAC winery shuttle buses (at an additional cost) or hop on a bus from several nearby regional cities (at an additional cost).
