The Hickinbotham's of Dromana

After time spent working around Australia and in France, Andrew and Terryn Hickinbotham established Hickinbotham of Dromana on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula in 1988 and bottled their first wines just three years later.

A third generation winemaker, Andrew's grandfather initiated the first scientific winemaking course in Australia while Andrew's father Ian was responsible for some of the most iconic Australian wines of the 1950s and 60s. These days Andrew's skills are also in high demand as a contract winemaker around Victoria and beyond.

Long before it became the fashion, Andrew and Terryn created their cellar door and winery from a variety of recycled and salvaged materials. The cellar door itself had a previous life as a high school gymnasium and once where gym mats lay, now sit French oak barrels in which a range of fine cool climate wines gently age.

What will I find here?

In the restaurant: Open seven days, we recommend booking a table in the restaurant for some relaxed summer dining. Here you will enjoy light gourmet lunches, freshly baked wine breads, home made terrines and slow cooked delights. The menu changes seasonally.

At the cellar door: Always curious to try new styles and varieties, the Hickinbothams produce a good selection of wines from sparkling whites to aged reds and even a ruby vintage port.

Also on offer is the delightfully delicious sparkling strawberry kiss and a luscious range of fruit liqueurs made seasonally from cherry, mango and strawberry.

For tea-totallers and designated drivers, try Hickinbotham's tasty non alcoholic cabernet grape juice.

Did we mention the beer? What started off as a small side project has turned into an exciting new venture and you can now enjoy four beers under the Hix Beer label, along with the odd special brew. The pilsner is superb.

What's on?

Lots! Over the summer months you will find numerous live bands playing here. The music and atmosphere is always fun and lively. It is best to check the Hickinbotham website for all the dates and details.

What should I ask to try?

  • Taminga: ever keen to try something new, Taminga is a new white wine variety bred by the CSIRO and Hickinbotham have just released their first 100 cases. Be one of the first to try this exciting new varietal now available at cellar door.
  • Strawberry Kiss: sparkling wine made from strawberries. What more needs to be said. Fabulous.
  • Hix Beer: when Hickinbotham's began brewing in 2008, only 32 litres were made and quickly consumed. Production since has doubled three times and now over 1500 litres are made. The range now includes a pilsner, pale ale, brown ale and Irish stout along with some special seasonal beers and even an apple sparkling wine. A pack of three bottle-conditioned beers is planned for release soon.
