Australia’s pre-eminent beer festival, Melbourne's Good Beer Week, will be celebrating its eighth anniversary in 2018 from 11-20 May. The line-up features headline guests from around the world, rockstar brewers, big-name chefs, sublime degustations, loads of live music and so much more.

The full program will not be made available to the public until 22 March, but Good Beer Week is happy to reveal a few secrets a month before launch…

Good Beer Mates, an initiative that was introduced last year to highlight a place in the world with a prospering craft beer community, returns this year with the spotlight on London. The Catfish in Fitzroy will become The London Hub and to celebrate, Good Beer Week will be bringing out some very special British guests including:

Melissa Cole, one of the UK’s leading beer experts and a respected international beer judge with more than a decade’s experience of writing and broadcasting. Melissa is also the author of The Little Book of Craft Beer, available in Australia through Hardie-Grant Books.

Jaega Wise, Head Brewer at Wild Card Brewery (UK), who is also a respected television presenter and musician. Jaega comes from a background in Chemical Engineering and in recent months has led a campaign for more inclusive beer advertising and speaking out against sexism in the beer industry.

Steve Grae, the brains behind Affinity Brew Co., an up-and-coming brewery from Bermondsey in London who play with interesting ingredients to produce extremely well-crafted beers.

Good Beer Week will once again be partnering with Private Dining Room to present Mega Dega VI, which has grown to become a lynchpin of the Good Beer Week calendar every year. Mega Dega VI brings together leading Melbourne chefs and local and international breweries for an indulgent feast held in a secret location. This year the line-up of brewers and chefs is an all-female extravaganza.

2018 will mark the inaugural Good Beer Gelateria – a special weeklong event held at Arbory Bar and Eatery, offering gelato lovers the chance to try different gelato flavours made in collaboration with a local brewery.

A number of venues will be joining the program for the very first time, including HOST Dining in Brunswick, Wilson and Market in Prahran, Footscray’s boozy bakery Bad Love Club, and Mjølner, the new Melbourne branch of Sydney’s sought-after Norse themed cocktail bar, from the same group that has Boilermaker House and Eau de Vie (both of which also feature in the program).

Beers and bands go hand in hand, and music is playing a huge role in this year’s festival. Many of Melbourne’s favourite live music venues are on board with exciting beer-fuelled events - The Corner Hotel, Northcote Social Club, The Grace Darling, The Spotted Mallard, The Old Bar, Section 8 and Ferdydurke are just some among the bunch.

There are a whole range of events taking place across regional Victoria too, such as Rogue Wave Surf and Brew Day in Aireys Inlet, which includes a morning surf lesson, an afternoon of brewing lessons at Rogue Wave Brewery, followed by dinner and beers. The Little Creatures West Side Beer Village will be held at Little Creatures in Geelong, bringing together local Geelong, Bellarine and Surf Coast breweries and home brewers with pop-ups down the laneway full of great beer, beer merch and gear along with delicious food and live entertainment.

Good Beer Week, the biggest beer festival in the Southern Hemisphere, is an independent and not-for-profit festival that celebrates and promotes the renaissance that craft beer is enjoying globally. Since the festival’s inception in 2011, its central aim is to promote good beer and the community and culture that surround it.
