Gourmet food, great wine and cycling at Boynton's in NE Victoria

 

The High Country will sate any cycling appetite with Top Rides for the Hungry Cyclist promising food, wine and craft beer worth pedalling for.

On the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, hop from cellar door to farm gate as you go and reward your ride with a winery or country pub lunch en route. Pack your panniers with regional produce to enjoy a lakeside picnic at Ebden, Ludlow’s or Huon Reserve along the High Country Rail Trail, or have one of Mansfield’s cafes and provedores pack you a picnic to enjoy on the shores of Lake Eildon just off the Great Victorian Rail Trail.

Murray to Mountains Rail Trail:

  • Rutherglen to Wahgunyah with lunch at All Saints Estate’s Terrace Restaurant:
    A leisurely pedal (approx. 9km one way) will see you treadling down the majestic elm-lined driveway to this historic castle winery. Wine and dine on contemporary dishes at their hatted restaurant overlooking the vines. On your way home, drop into welcoming cellar doors at Valhalla Wines, Cofield Wines or Pfeiffer Wines.

 

  • Beechworth to Everton & Tarrawingee with lunch at The Plough Inn:
    Whet the appetite just out of Beechworth with a tasting at Pennyweight Winery before a mostly downhill pedal to Everton and detour on flat country roads to The Plough Inn, a gastropub with gold rush history (32km one way). Book a transfer for the uphill return via High Country Bike Adventures  or Riding High Cycling Tours

 

  • Wangaratta to Oxley & Milawa to "Pedal to Produce":
    Pedal 15km (one way) into the heart of the Milawa Gourmet Region, hopping from cellar door to farmgate to provedore to work the tastebuds as well as your legs! Collect a picnic as you go, or pull up the bike for a luscious lunch at Brown Brothers Epicurean Centre, Snow Road Produce or Sam Miranda.

 

  • Bright to Gapsted with a leisurely lunch among the vines:
    Pedal through the fertile Ovens Valley to lunch-with-a-view at Boynton’s Feathertop Winery (10km one way) in Porepunkah or Gapsted Winery (38km one way). En route to Gapsted, pop into Ringer Reef Winery, Bright Berry Farms or Myrtleford Butter Factory to taste delicious drops and morsels to take home. Return transfers bookable with Bright’s Bus-a-Bike.

 

Great Victorian Rail Trail

  • Mansfield to Bonnie Doon with lunch at Bonnie Bar:
    Time this 22km pedal (one way) for a lunch of wood-fired pizzas with a cleansing craft ale at this family-friendly beer bar and kitchen. Make sure to leave room for their house-made ice cream and time for a dip in majestic Lake Eildon!

 

  • Mansfield to Yarck with a picnic lunch from Mansfield Regional Produce Store:
    Begin this 56km (one way) with a pedal-starting coffee at local hub Mansfield Regional Produce Store while you collect a picnic lunch. When hunger strikes along the trail, pause in a shady patch of country paradise, before the onward journey to Yarck and afternoon tea at the Giddy Goat Café. Return transfers bookable via All Terrain Cycles or Rail Trail Cycling Tours.
