Whether you’re a couple looking for some culinary delights with your cycling, a young family keen on a leisurely spin or a group of enthusiasts looking for a pedal-powered getaway, the region’s bike-loving community has shared their Top Rail Trail Rides to point visiting cyclists in the right direction.

North East Victoria’s ever-changing, panoramic landscapes are the perfect setting for two-wheeled experiences, spring through autumn. Built on abandoned railway corridors, the region’s Rail Trails traverse mostly flat terrain and offer diverse mountain and valley vistas. The Trails include:

  • The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail (starting in Wangaratta and connecting culinary villages including Beechworth, Milawa and Bright)
  • Great Victorian Rail Trail (the longest continuous Rail Trail at 134km, stretching from Mansfield to Tallarook)
  • High Country Rail Trail (Wodonga to Old Tallangatta around Lake Hume)

The High Country will sate any cycling appetite with Top Rides for the Hungry Cyclist promising food, wine and craft beer worth pedalling for. On the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, hop from cellar door to farm gate as you go and reward your ride with a winery or country pub lunch en route. Pack your panniers with regional produce to enjoy a lakeside picnic at Ebden, Ludlow’s or Huon Reserve along the High Country Rail Trail, or have one of Mansfield’s cafes and provedores pack you a picnic to enjoy on the shores of Lake Eildon just off the Great Victorian Rail Trail.

The Great Victorian Rail Trail boasts almost 50 water crossings as it follows the Goulburn River and traverses a glimmering Lake Eildon, while the High Country Rail Trail hugs the shoreline of the spectacular Lake Hume including a 600m crossing at the new Sandy Creek Bridge. Pedalling the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, you’re also never far from a refreshing dip in the Ovens or Murray River.

Pack your bathers in your bike basket for the region’s Top Pedal ‘n’ Dips to make the most of the pristine mountain-fed rivers and lakes of the North East. The region also boasts some of Victoria’s best recreational fishing in Victoria, so leave room for a rod in your backpack!
