Five star boutique Bellarine winery, Leura Park Estate has been awarded one of the most prestigious Trophies in the Australian wine industry - Best Shiraz of Show at the 2014 National Wine Show – for its 2013 single vineyard Estate Shiraz.

This award follows on from the same wine winning the Trophy for Best Shiraz of Show at the recent Geelong Wine Show.

At 1.7 acres, the Shiraz block is the smallest on the 150 acre Leura Park property which has 40 acres planted to vines. The tiny block is highly nurtured with the fruit being hand-picked after heavy culling pre-harvest to ensure maximum flavour intensity.

The trophy was presented to Leura Park Estate Winemaker, Darren Burke at a gala awards dinner in Canberra on the 20th November - a coveted, sell out event regarded as a showcase of Australia’s best wines and attended by more than 300 people.

Competition was certainly fierce. The Leura Park Estate Shiraz was entered in Class 31, Single Vineyard. There were 41 wines entered in Class 31 and the Leura Park Estate Shiraz was awarded the top gold (there were four other gold medals in this class).

For the overall Shiraz trophy, it was judged against the top gold in each of the premium Shiraz classes (Class 17, 2013 vintage, 62 wines; Class 18 2012 vintage, 103 wines; Class 19, 2011 and older, 53 wines).

Winemaker Darren Burke said the award was a career highlight particularly and represented the ultimate in 3rd party endorsement.

“The achievement of a wine show award of any stature is that the wine speaks. There are no labels influencing or prejudicing the taster, it just comes down to that particular wine at that one moment in time. To win a trophy at the National wine show which has only the Best of the Best wines entered is awesome and incredibly humbling. It endorses what we are doing in the vineyard and the winery,” Mr Burke said.

“In 2013, I picked at several ripeness levels and was presented with bright full flavoured fruit each time. The fruit was mostly de-stemmed and fermented in small batches with gentle handling at ferment with one plunge per day. A small amount of juice was run off during ferment for barrel fermentation to add complexity to wine while the remainder completed ferment on skins. Pressed then transferred to 300L French oak barrels for 10 months where malolactic fermentation was completed on lees. The wine was racked and bottled unfined in late January.”

“I think the wine stands up because of its balance. It has beautiful hue, vibrant bright aromatic fruit of red and blue berries. A rich palate of blackberries and ripe cherry with some classic Bellarine spice & pepper coupled with succulent mouth-watering acidity provides a memorable vinous experience. The wine lingers on the palate finishing with fine silky tannins.”

A small quantity of the award winning Leura Park Shiraz 2013 is available as a limited, celebratory pre-release via the Leura Park Estate website www.leuraparkestate.com.au or onsite at the popular Leura Park Estate Cellar Door, open 10am – 5pm on weekends.

The wine is very well priced retailing at $40 per bottle or great value for a dozen purchase, only $360 including free freight, anywhere in Australia.
