The Ultimate Beer Guide to Australia and New Zealand aims to create a win-win situation for beer lovers planning their travels with partners and families by giving everyone something to enjoy on the journey.

According to the brewery map and the index, Australia and NZ have 270 breweries between them so if you’re a beer lover planning a family holiday, where would you start? We suggest this Guide is a great place for getting a feel of what might interest you and importantly, tips on what else there is to do for the rest of your family, whatever size it may be.

Sensibly sorted by state and then by region, the Ultimate Beer Guide provides an overview of the brewing state of affairs, the local breweries, specialist bars and beer outlets, other attractions, places to stay, interesting pubs and profiles on various breweries and venues. It also lists the major events for that region around which a trip might be planned.

Locally made cider and distilled products are also experiencing a significant increase in interest and these are also included.

The Guide, published by Beer and Brewer, is a compilation from a variety of leading beer and travel writers, all with their own particular areas of expertise and interest.

With the way the craft brewing industry is growing, the increase in cider and distilleries and the changes in the tourism industry, it’s enough of a challenge for an online business to keep track but for a print publication it’s an impossible task to be completely current from the time of publishing. Who’s doing what, who’s open, when and at what times changes but the Guide certainly provides a great starting point for travel plans and beer research. It’s also a paperback that’s easily slotted into the case for quick reference on the road.

The Guide is designed to be updated each year and actively encourages breweries, beer-lovers and others to provide feedback for next year’s edition. This can be on venues for inclusion, beer experiences or on the Guide itself – just email details to before 31st May 2012.

We think Beer and Brewer should add in a word in the title to reflect its real worth – The Ultimate Beer (travel) Guide for Australia and New Zealand.

Whilst it’s great for exploring Australia, just wish I’d had a copy when we last visited New Zealand as there's a wealth of amber experiences across the Tasman.

The Ultimate Beer Guide Australia and New Zealand by Beer and Brewer is published by Lipcorp Publishing (August 2011, sb 252 pages, RRP A$24.99) and available at bookstores, newsagents, Dan Murphy’s, homebrew shops, beer bars, independent bottleshops and online at Beer and Brewer
