When you set off on the Great Eastern Drive, make sure you come with an appetite. This journey will lead you to many of Tasmania’s most delicious experiences in some of its most beautiful locations. The east coast’s mild climate creates perfect growing conditions for the state’s premium fresh produce, from sweet berries and nuts to fine cool climate wines, award-winning cheeses and the freshest seafood imaginable.

The region has long attracted passionate growers, producers, winemakers, cheesemakers and chefs, whose tantalising creations are just waiting for you to try.

The Great Eastern Drive is a pathway to some of the most delicious and memorable gourmet experiences a food lover could wish for. Your only challenge is to decide which you want to savour first!

Take a weekend, a few days or longer to explore, feast and wander.

Break your journey at a B&B with an ocean view, a luxury lodge or coastal retreat and, when you need time to digest all those delicious flavours you’ve been spoiling yourself with, grab a taste of some of the region’s most memorable experiences. Take a kayak along the coast or a cruise to the east coast’s famed beaches, or maybe work up a fresh appetite on some of Australia’s best walks.

So, take to the road on the Great Eastern Drive and follow these suggestions for stopping along the way and experiencing a true food lover’s adventure.

How long will you need?

The east coast’s excellent food and wine experiences are easy to find. There are cafes, restaurants, providores and producers in every town on the coast, so all you have to do is take a little time to stop at the destination of your choice for a meal or snack, or to taste produce right at the source.

Many cellar doors on the East Coast Wine Route are located within a short drive of each other. Allow an afternoon or full day to tour the wineries, enjoy a tasting and settle in for a delicious lunch. (See lnks below for more stories on these cellar doors). Check cellar door opening times with the vineyard before visiting as some are open only by appointment.

If you’re planning to travel in November, allow a day to relax and enjoy the offerings of the Bicheno Food and Wine Festival, or stay longer and combine your visit with accommodation and tours of the local area. You can time your visits to farm gates like Kate’s Berry Farm, the Pyengana Dairy Company and the Freycinet Marine Farm to include a lunch, afternoon or morning tea. Tours of Freycinet Marine Farm, including tastings of oysters and mussels, are available for groups of 10 or more and take one hour (bookings essential). Check with individual farm gates and businesses for opening times before you travel.

If you just haven’t the time to try all the food and wine moments the Great Eastern Drive has to offer, you can still enjoy a little taster of the region’s best.

  1. Eat a freshly shucked oyster (or some fresh crayfish, or abalone, or mussels, or…). For a seafood lover, the east coast represents pure happiness. You’ll find opportunities to sample the fresh fish, shellfish and seafood that the region is deservedly famous for at restaurants, fishmongers, seafood producers, takeaways and tour operators all along the coast.
     
  2.  Pick your own fruit (or vegetables). Then eat it. Tasmania is known all over the world for its exquisite fresh produce and really, you haven’t truly tasted a raspberry until you’ve plucked one fresh from the vine in the Tasmanian sun. You can pick your own fruit at farm gates along the coast, buy freshly harvested local fruits and vegetables at markets, or source gourmet products crafted from the region’s natural bounty at providores and shops along the Great Eastern Drive.
     
  3.  Visit an east coast cellar door. You can very easily have one of the finest afternoons of your life by visiting a handful of east coast vineyards and discovering for yourself just why the world loves Tasmanian wine. Most cellar doors on the east coast are located between Swansea and Bicheno, and many offer tempting Tasmanian gourmet tasting plates or meals to accompany your favourite vintage, so…what are you waiting for?
