A unique winter warmer was launched ahead of Dark Mofo as Willie Smith's continues forging ahead with innovative collaborations featuring Tasmanian trail blazing-businesses.

This time Willie Smith's has joined forces with the crew at one of the newest breweries to hit town – the Hobart Brewing Co. – to create a rare Smoked Apple Bock.

The unique offering also required the help of Lark Distillery and is being described as a labour of love that will certainly give patrons at Dark Mofo and the Huon Valley Mid-Winter Festival something different to digest and debate.

Hobart Brewing Co. Head Brewer Scott Overdorf said the first keg would be tapped on Friday 10th June at the Red Shed Tap Room, Evans St, Macquarie Point. He said the collaboration celebrates everything that is great about the new and exciting brewing scene in Tasmania.

“We kicked off the collaboration by heading out to Lark Distillery just outside of Hobart with apple wood from the Willie Smith’s Orchards, supplied by Head Cider Marker Tim Jones,” he explains,

“Naturally, all cider makers have a bit of apple wood available for such occasions! We spent most of the day with the help of Lark's distillers peat smoking barley with the applewood."

“The lads from Willie Smith's rolled into our brewery the next morning, and with 100 litres of freshly pressed organic apple juice in tow, we brewed a German inspired dunkle bock.

“The result of our labour of love is a rich and malty dark winter warmer with ruby highlights. Apple and smoke on the nose. Full bodied maltiness upfront with caramel and raison notes followed by red apple flavours from the Willie's blend of Royal Gala, Pink Lady and Fuji. Finishing with subtle and lingering sweet applewood smoke.”

The Beer Will be available as `Beer of the Month' at Willie Smith’s Apple Shed in July and will be pouring during the Huon Valley Mid Winter Festival held there on the 15th – 17th of July.

Willie Smith’s Head Cider Maker Dr Tim Jones said he was excited to collaborate with one of the exciting new kids on the craft scene block.

“We love Tasmania and especially the boutique alcohol market – basically we just like doing cool things and having fun with people we like and respect!” he said.

It's Willie Smith's second foray into beer following the well-received Moo Brew Apple Saison collaboration, released earlier this year.

“The first one celebrated the new season apples, this one is an apple based beer for winter using the smoked apple wood to create some amazing flavours perfect for winter,” Dr Jones said.
