Four generations of apple farmers have tended Willie Smith's Huon Valley orchards that grew apples for exporting around the world, and now produce organic apple cider.

It's an increasingly common story on family-owned farms around Tasmania, with younger generations seizing opportunities to diversify into high quality produce, created in an environment the envy of many.

In 1997 Andrew Smith, the fourth generation and current orchardist, took the bold step of going organic and quite simply hasn't looked back.

Collaborations with Grandewe Cheese and Lark Distillery – along with special seasonal releases, events and the Apple Museum – are all part of this energetic Tasmanian business, blending history and innovation seamlessly together.

Revitalising an old craft, Willie Smith's has now released a Traditional Cider Apple Blend. This is a delicious blend of traditional heirloom cider apples and table apples, made using old world cider-making approaches of the long-time cider producers of France and England.

This exciting new cider, released in 2017, is the result of Willie Smith's commitment to delivering distinctly different, innovative and flavoursome ciders to the Australian cider market.

Tasting notes: 

Willie Smith’s Traditional Cider is a richly golden coloured unfiltered cider, made in the traditional French and English farmhouse style. It's a full-bodied, cloudy cider with a wonderful aroma and enjoyable deep flavours.

French and British heirloom cider apples contribute complexity, texture, lifted fresh apple aromas and deep honeyed toffee notes to the cider.

The front palate is rich and smooth and gives way to a drying grippy finish, making it a cider that is both medium sweet and drying at the same time.  It is this character and balance that makes the Traditional Cider both easily enjoyed by the pint at the bar, or quietly pondered over when matched with good food.

Food matching:

Willie Smith's Traditional Cider is crafted in a way that makes it fully drinkable at the bar and equally well suited to serious food.  The lifted fruit aromas and textured mouthfeel make it a perfect accompaniment to chargrilled free-range pork loin served with a roasted stone fruit and witlof salad.

Currently available in keg form and 750ml bottles from early September 2017.
