Three award-winning Tasmanian artisans have joined forces to create a one-off cheese that will be launched exclusively at the Huon Valley Mid-Winter Festival, starting this Friday.

Festival host Willie Smith’s Cider is no stranger to innovative collaborations and has previously worked with both Lark Distillery and Grandvewe Cheeses on unique and boutique products.

All three businesses have now combined their skill sets to produce “The Boiler Maker Blue” - comprising Grandvewe’s Sapphire Blue injected with Willie Smith’s Pommy Sundowner Apple Wash and Lark’s base Whisky wash.

Willie Smith's and Grandvewe Cheese last year presented festival patrons with an Australian-first washed rind cheese - winning rave reviews. Combining the extra element of Lark Whisky is another chapter in the story of creativity that is the cider house.

"The cheese is simply sensational and will really be a lovely way to commemorate this event, which is growing in popularity and has at its heart a spirit of celebrating and seeking things that are different," Festival Organiser and Willie Smith's spokesman Sam Reid said.

Distiller, Craig Johnstone of Lark Distillery and Cider Maker, Jimi Anderson of Willie Smith’s made the Sapphire Blue with Grandvewe cheese maker Nicole Gilliver in early May this year. A 1/3 to 2/3 blend of Lark and Willie Smith’s wash was injected into the batch of blue cheese last month.

"The idea came about as an extension of a collaboration between Willie Smith’s Cider and Lark Distillery for the Willie Smith Whisky Matured Cider that was essentially a Tasmanian cider and Tasmanian Whisky reverse interpretation of the classic Bourbon and Beer ‘Boiler Maker’ albeit from a crafting perspective," explains Ms Gilliver.

The Grandvewe Boiler Maker Blue will be available for exclusive sale at Willie Smith’s Huon Valley Mid Winter Fest only and will feature at the Grandvewe stall alongside the Wild Willie Washed Rind cheese that was made for HVMWF 2015 and has been offered again due to popularity.

Lark Distillery will also run a master class on the Friday night at the festival, which is expected to attract 10,000 people over the three days to enjoy the best food, wine, whisky, cider and chocolates from the region in a celebration of all things pagan and punk.
