What is South Australia really like? To find out, Ben Stubbs travels the vast the state, exploring its history and people, and debunking some major clichés, along the way.

In the spirit of the best travel writing and literary non-fiction, he lingers in places of quiet beauty and meets some memorable people.

From Maralinga to Ceduna, and Kangaroo Island, the Flinders Ranges, Coober Pedy, the Adelaide suburb of Elizabeth and many more, Ben Stubbs writes about Afghan cameleers, Burke and Wills, the rabbit proof fence, and also addresses head on the question ‘Is South Australia weird?’

The Crow Eaters will appeal to Australians interested in the history of the country beyond the eastern states, travellers keen to understand the stories of some of the most unusual (and under-explored) places in Australia and readers who want to learn more about the diverse group of people in South Australia, from shark divers and paleontologists to nuclear tour guides, dog fence patrollers, Indigenous rangers and Afghan cameleers.

You'll find it hard to resist the book's implicit invitation to look at places much closer to home.

“Takes you where the silence is massive and the beauty unexpected.” - Christopher Kremmer
