Zema Estate 2006 Shiraz

Zema Estate is located in the renowned Coonawarra wine region of South Australia.  The Zema family has been producing exceptional ‘hand crafted’ Coonawarra wines since 1982 with all wines are estate grown, vintaged and bottled.

Demetrio and Francesca Zema started their lives in Calabria before moving to the Coonawarra to establish their own family on the famous Terra Rossa of the region. The Zema Estate Shiraz is fully reflective of the remarkable soil:

Zema Estate 2006 Shiraz

Made by Greg Clayfield from 100% Coonawarra shiraz grapes, this wine is a dark medium colour with brick red and purple hues. The aroma is of ripe blackberry fruit character with varietal pepper and spice with a full bodied palate with underlying hint of aniseed complimented by fine yet nutty oak characters.  The finish displays tight and persistent tannins excellent fruit weight and acid balance.

Viticulture: Coonawarra is renowned for its remarkable Terra Rossa soil, a thin metre band of soil over laying a deep formation of limestone.  The Zema family is proudly traditional in its approach to vineyard practices, favouring hand pruning and limited irrigation to maximise fruit quality. These practices are enhanced by the location of the family’s three strategically selected prime vineyard locations, capitalising on the regions subtle climatic variations.

Winemaking: This wine was made from fruit which was harvested at its optimum maturity. The wine was fermented for 7 days under controlled temperatures in a combination of rotary and static fermenters. Maturation in small French and American oak barrels for 14 months has assisted in the development of a wine that shows vibrancy and  richness.

Match with : spicy sausages, osso bucco, Irish stew.

Cellaring: Well structured with outstanding depth of fruit, this wine while drinking well now will further develop with cellaring for at least another 6 to 8 years.
