Fruit from Oliver's Taranga in McLaren Vale has gone into the country's prestigious red, Penfolds Grange, for 14 vintages since 1996. The last three were in 2012, 2013 and for 2014, a feat which awards the vineyard the Penfolds Triple Crown Grange Growers Perpetual Trophy.

Back in 1996, Penfolds introduced the Grange Growers Club for the elite group of growers who supply grapes for this renowned wine. Don Oliver from Oliver's Taranga was one of the founding members.

From then, Penfolds introduced computer tracking of the fruit so they could readily identify which grapes met the high standards and at the same time brought in the Perpetual Trophy for three consecutive years of inclusion.

There have been other growers from McLaren Vale contribute to Grange but Oliver's Taranga has been the most consistent with 14 years inclusion since records were started in 1996. Most likely it was part of the blend before then too.

Penfolds actually pays the Grange Growers Club on the hectares they dedicate to planting for Grange, rather than the quantity produced, encouraging a higher emphasis on quality.  Oliver's Taranga has five blocks in the Club and, as winemaker Corinna Wright says, they've been very creative with the names! There are Old Block, North and South Blocks, Top Bock and Rayments Block. Sometimes one block gets in, sometimes none and sometimes all.

Vaughan Cooke is the Penfolds Grower Liaison Office and helps the winemakers choose the fruit that will ultimately make the Grange. While the grapes are still on the vine they will be tasted many times before the final harvest.

Don Oliver says "I love being able to contribute fruit for such an iconic Australian wine and brand in Penfolds. It makes me very proud and I feel that aiming for Penfold’s Grange really drives the quality of the entire vineyard forward every year. We are super lucky that the generations before us decided to settle on this land in McLaren Vale, it has turned out to be extraordinary dirt for growing high quality grapes.” and he adds “I only wish that they would put McLaren Vale on the label one day, instead of just South Australia!”
