South Australia’s hottest wine buys are waiting to be uncorked this summer. The Limestone Coast Grape and Wine Council (LCGWC) has released its 2018 ‘Top 50’ based on some of the most exciting performers among the 500 entries in the Limestone Coast Wine Show.

The wine show committee’s Lauren Hansen says the wish-list is a toast to one of the region’s most successful years on record, saluting trophy and medal-winning wines from the history-making October 2018 event.

“Judges handed over a record 338 medals, and this was no easy feat given that this year’s entries faced tougher scrutiny than ever before; we had 10 judges rather than the traditional six really teasing apart the top quality wines,” she said.

“The 18th annual wine show saw some great quality wines across the board; whether you’re looking for some fizz, a top drop to gift a loved one, something unusual for your wine nerd friends or just something tasty and relaxing, the Limestone Coast has something to suit – and as always, it is punching above its dollar value in terms of quality.”

A $20 bottle of wine never tasted so good – the Bill Redman Trophy for Best Wine of Show went to The 2016 George Wyndham ‘I Am George’ Shiraz Cabernet.

The 2016 Penley Estate Gryphon was another gold medal winner falling in at the same $20 price point, along with the 2017 Norfolk Rise Estate Shiraz, which was declared Chief of Judges Samantha Connew’s ‘Wine to Watch’.

$20 will also buy a bottle of the Best Sparkling Wine Trophy Winner NV Leconfield Syn Rouge, and the Best Aromatic White Trophy winner – the 2018 DiGiorgio Family Wines Kongorong Riesling.

For only a few dollars more, you can also enjoy DiGiorgio’s 2017 Coonawarra Chardonnay, which was named Best White Wine of Show.

Hosts looking for something special to pair with a roast pr bbq will get plenty of inspiration from the list’s ‘Perfectly Aged’ section, which really highlights the staying power of the region’s red wines in particular.

Labels like Jacaranda Ridge, Lawson’s, Majella, Zema and Wynns all rate a favourable mention, while you cannot go past the Best Museum Trophy Winner 2010 St Hugo Vetus Purum Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon for something truly memorable. Previous wine show winner Pepper Tree has a 2016 ‘P.J.P’ Super Premium Wrattonbully Cabernet Sauvignon that is also worth the investment.

For festive ‘Sparkling and Fizz’, the 2013 Grey Smith Mount Gambier Blanc de Blanc, the 2015 Cuvee Co. The Kenneth Vintage Brut and the 2017 Wangolina Moscato are celebration-ready.

The rose comeback continues with a couple of real stunners in the 2018 Leconfield Coonawarra Rose and the 2018 Petaluma White Label Rose.

For something different, the 2018 Bellwether Ant Series Wrattonbully Barbera and the 2018 Penley Estate Spring Release Cab Franc made the List’s ‘Not The Usual Suspects’ category.

“The variety of entries from across the Limestone Coast’s six sub-regions is a really important indicator of the quality of wines from this small corner of Australia, so this list will serve as the ultimate tasting guide for the exciting weeks ahead,” Lauren says.
