I visited Maggie’s Kitchen at Pheasant Farm a few years ago during a wine tour of the Barossa Valley.

It’s a little off the main road, but it’s a well beaten track, and we were surprised to find a crowd out on the deck in the cool winter sunshine enjoying lunchbox sized samplers from Maggie’s delicious range of preserves and freshly made breads and deli treats.  It was a delicious way to taste the Barossa and, I think, quite unique then, though now I find regional sampler plates on cafe menus throughout regional Australia.

They have followed the diva’s lead, and now so do I. Since her latest cookbook became mine I have been following Maggie like no other writer since Nigella taught me How to eat.

Maggie’s Kitchen is now replicated in my kitchen on a regular basis. In fact, one of her recipes – a Beef Pie Mix – has become one of my staples, though the deliciously rich deep shiraz and beef stew rarely makes it to the pie stage. It is quite possibly the best and most adaptable stew recipe I’ve found and works equally well slow-cooked in the crock pot and fast cooked, by comparison, on the stove top.

My two-year old son can’t get enough of her Boston Baked Beans – he calls them “bossy beans” and is quite bossy when he asks for more. Other highlights are the Preserved Figs recipe, which saved the harvest from our fig tree from the birds and is now adding a new dimension to our winter cheese platters and roast chickens.

Maggie’s kitchen is a mother’s kitchen, and her book oozes with wholesome, nurturing goodness. It’s structured around the beginning, middle and end of meal dishes and Maggie encourages indulgence.

“I hope my ideas and recipes will expand your horizons and show how easy it is to enjoy simple food that is full of flavour every day of your life,” she says in her introduction.

Maggie’s Kitchen is a very satisfying read with lovely introductions and suggestions attached to all the recipes. This really is essential for home cooks who love real food.
