Nebbiolo Rosato, Longview Vineyard

Family-owned estate, Longview has taken home an astounding four trophies at the 2017 Royal Melbourne Wine Show.

In what is understood to be a record for an Adelaide Hills winery at the prestigious show, the Macclesfield-based producer is also the first ever to win a trophy for a wine made from the Nebbiolo grape.

Three of the trophies were for wine;

  • Best Riesling in Show – 2017 Iron Knob Riesling.
  • Best Rosé in Show – 2017 Nebbiolo Rosato and
  • The coveted Douglas Seabrook Trophy for Best Single Vineyard Wine, again for the Riesling.

However, the big news came when the Kym Ludvigsen Trophy for Viticultural Excellence was awarded to Longview Viticulturist, Dino Cotsaris.

This Trophy honours the 40 year legacy left by Ludvigsen, whose passion and dedication to viticulture developed and advanced the landscape of Australian vineyards and goes to the team behind the grapes that produce the best single vineyard wines.

In his speech, Dino spoke of the challenges he faced coming to a cool-climate region like the Adelaide Hills after growing up on vineyards in the warmer climes of SA’s Riverland.

Longview Managing Director, an elated Peter Saturno, said:“The Nebbiolo Rosato Trophy was particularly special.  “Our family is passionate about Nebbiolo and have been striving to perfect different styles of the grape for many years, so this is validation that we’re on the right track.”

This Riesling block now has an amazing nine Trophies under its belt. Quite remarkable for the Adelaide Hills, where other white varietals overshadow the variety.
