The Royal Queensland Wine Show (RQWS) judges have begun the task of sniffing, swirling and tasting their way through more than 1,600 Australian wines in a bid to discover the nation’s finest.

For the second year renowned winemaker David Bicknell is at the helm of the prestigious judging panel as Chief Judge for the first capital city wine show of the season.

The RQWS is the first to critically review the 2017 vintage in Australia, setting the benchmark for the industry.

The team of judges are tasting their way through the nation’s top drops over the next four days, judging on a criteria of appearance, aroma, body and finish.

The RQWS dates back to the very first Royal Queensland show in 1876, and has continued its tradition of recognising excellence and showcasing the nation’s diverse growing regions, the passionate winemakers and their outstanding wines.

The judging will conclude this Thursday June 29, with the awards held Friday July 7 in the Upper Exhibition Building at the Brisbane Showgrounds.

Envious wine loving members of the public will also have their chance to taste the nation’s finest at the third annual ‘Grape Grazing by Night – Celebrating Australian Wine’ that evening, a rare opportunity to sample the award-winning white, red and sparkling.

More than 650 wine enthusiasts attended last year’s event, which also showcased the award-winning beef, lamb and cheese the Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show unearthed earlier that year.
