Stockman’s Ridge Wines won three trophies at the recent 2011 NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show with their 2009 Stockman’s Ridge ‘Outlaw’ Orange Region Shiraz.

The trophies, including the coveted Red Wine of the Show, are the first such win for this small Central Ranges winegrower whose first Shiraz vintage was only one year earlier.

The trophies awarded comprised:

  • Best Red Wine of Show
    2009 Stockman’s Ridge Outlaw Shiraz
  • Best Boutique Red Wine of Show

  • Best Shiraz 2009/10

“We are ecstatic as this is just our second vintage. It is a great surprise to collect one, let alone three trophies so soon”, commented Stockman’s Ridge owner Jonathan Hambrook. “The Shiraz class had 51 wines, of which 34 were awarded medals.

This is indicative of the quality of the wines being made in NSW, and makes our win that much better given the show’s competitiveness.”

The win in Class 17 for the Shiraz allowed the wine to move on to compete for the Boutique wine awards that are judged from wines made by wineries that crush less than 300 tonnes. “We are well below the 300 tonne mark.  The wine subsequently won the best boutique red and then the best red of the show.”

Stockman’s Ridge has been gaining momentum over the past couple of years.  “With the increase in awareness and understanding of New South Wales and Orange wines, it’s been a great couple of years.”

“We have received a number of accolades from shows such as the National Wine Show of Australia and the Great Australian Shiraz Challenge which gives us confidence in what we are doing in the vineyard and winery.”

“We have plans of increasing our presence in Orange over the coming years,” said Jonathan. “There are a number of opportunities there and we’re looking forward to becoming more involved in the activities of the region.”

The 2011 wine show was chaired by Andrew Thomas of Thomas Wines in the Hunter Valley. Andrew is recognised as one of NSW premier winemakers and was assisted in the judging with Mike de Iuliis, Debbie Pearce, Bryan Martin, Sarah Crowe, Drew Tuckwell and Mike Bennie.

Jonathan’s vision is to create a diverse range of premium cool climate wines and styles from both his own vines and the best from the Orange region.
