James Halliday Wine Companion 2016 award winners

Keenly anticipated each year by winemakers, collectors and wine lovers, the Halliday Wine Companion is recognised nationally as the industry benchmark. Over 8900 wines were tasted for this edition, which also has several important new features.

The Halliday Wine Companion provides detailed tasting notes and points for each of the wines covered in the book, a drink-to year, and each wine’s closure, alcohol content and price. The book also provides more than 1300 winery profiles (including 92 new wineries).

This year, Campbell Mattinson brings his expertise and poetic style to the tasting room with James. Their collaboration adds a fresh dimension to the book. Tyson Stelzer has provided the same information on sparkling wines; he is recognised as the leading authority on this style.

In addition, the book also provides information about the wineries, winemakers and vineyard sizes, as well as opening times and contact details.
An indispensable reference from the country’s leading wine authority, the Halliday Wine Companion is a must-have guide for anyone planning a visit to a wine region, or wanting to replenish their cellar.

About the Author:
Respected wine critic and vigneron James Halliday AM has a career that spans over 45 years, but he’s most widely known for his witty and informative writing about wine.

As one of the founders of Brokenwood in the Hunter Valley, and thereafter of Coldstream Hills in the Yarra Valley, James is an unmatched authority on every aspect of the wine industry, from the planting and pruning of vines through to the creation and marketing of the finished product.

His winemaking has led him to sojourns in Bordeaux and Burgundy, and he had had a long career as a wine judge in Australia and overseas.

In 1995 he received the wine industry’s ultimate accolade, the Maurice O’Shea Award. In 2010 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia.

James has written or contributed to more than 75 books on wine since he began writing in 1970. His books have been translated into Mandarin, Japanese, French, German, Danish, Icelandic and Polish, and have been published in the UK and the US, as well as in Australia. He is the author of Varietal Wines, A Life in Wine, and an upcoming new edition of The Wine Atlas of Australia.

The Halliday Wine Companion by James Halliday is published by Hardie Grant (Richmond, Vic, 2015;  SC, 776pp) and retails for RRP A$39.95. Available from all good bookshops and online.
