Bursting Bubbles – A Secret History of Champagne and The Rise of the Great Growers »
By Robert Walters, respected wine merchant and vineyard owner
Bursting Bubbles – A Secret History of Champagne & The Rise of the Great Growers is a ground-breaking new book that offers the reader an alternative history of Champagne and its greatest growers.
Often controversial, Bursting Bubbles is a no-holds barred look at the world’s most famous wine region and the sparkling wine that it produces. It has the potential to change the way wine lovers think about Champagne.
The author Robert Walters is a respected wine importer and distributor, vineyard owner and writer with over 25 years of experience in the Australian wine trade. His obsessive search for great wine growers has led him to import many of Champagne’s finest artisans into Australia, and his work with these producers has changed the way Champagne is drunk in this country.
Walters’ deep knowledge of the region comes from working with some of the pre-eminent growers of Champagne for close to 15 years, giving him a unique perspective.
As the title suggest, Bursting Bubbles offers wine-lovers – not just experts – a refreshingly honest history of the Champagne region from the beginnings of sparkling wine production through to the rise of the great growers in recent decades. It is also a travelogue, with Walters guiding the reader through the region, from north to south, in order to drop in on many of the region's greatest growers.
Along the way, he challenges the traditional histories that have been told of the region and dispels many of the myths that still persist about Champagne.
Walters says, “Bursting Bubbles is a work that will undoubtedly ruffle some feathers, but I felt it was a story that was worth telling regardless. I have tried to write it in a way that will appeal to both the wine industry and the general reader – in short, anyone with an interest in Champagne. My hope is that it will start a conversation and help wine lovers to better understand Champagne, both the wine and the region.”
The book is divided into 20 chapters which cover both the history of the region and detailed portraits of the great growers that are visited. These also offer a strong critique of the current winemaking and viticultural practices of the region. Walters’ approach in each chapter is no-nonsense, at times humorous and irreverent.
In addition there are ten short 'myth busting' essays that challenge the most common myths that still persist about Champagne and its wines.
In both the chapters and myth essays, Walters gives the reader an insider’s perspective on Champagne, revealing many of the region’s hidden secrets and passing on the knowledge of its finest producers. The reader is certain to come away with a far deeper understanding and appreciation of Champagne, its history and its wines.
Bursting Bubbles by Robert Walters is self-published (Oct 2016, HB, RRP A$39.90). It is available for purchase at good wine stores across Australia, selected independent Australian bookstores (like Books for Cooks) and directly via www.burstingbubbles.com.au.
A broader, international release plus paperback and digital editions are planned for 2017.
