How to include superfoods in every meal
By Laura McKinnon
Looking for a way to better yourself through diet? Superfoods 24/7 might be the cookbook you’ve been looking for. The author of the book, Jessica Nadel, considers superfood to be whole, plant-based foods that are thought to have additional health-supporting properties. They are nutrient dense and full of antioxidants.
A ‘superfood fact file’ can be found at the beginning of the book that gives information about the various types of superfoods to be utilised within recipes. Categories include
- seeds and nuts
- grains and pulses
- spices and seasonings
- ancient superfoods
Also featured towards the beginning are ‘basics’ for making best use of some of the superfood ingredients, as well as some meal plans.
Superfoods 24/7 not only caters to the health conscious, but also to those who are vegetarian and vegan. Many of the recipes are light, and the Blissful Blueberry Oatmeal Smoothie is delicious – a brilliant concoction for a summer’s day. Also a highlight are the Orange Cacao-chip Breakfast Biscuits – perfect for popping in the kids’ lunch boxes or for taking to work.
Some of the recipes provide interesting and tasty combinations – the Apple, Beetroot, Broccoli Slaw for example. The addition of sweet potato to a potato salad also acts as a good twist to what has become a fairly standard recipe.
There are quite a few twists on more traditional recipes, which is what makes this cookbook interesting. For those who like doing something a little bit different with their cooking, and for those who like experimenting with different flavours and textures this book will be of value. There’s an Adzuki Bean and Pumpkin Chilli, a Udon Soup with Broccoli, Kale and Sweet Potato, Curried Lentil-walnut Sliders and Quinoa Sushi Hand Rolls.
And dessert is not forgotten! There are Raw Brownie Truffles, Lucuma Ice-cream, Chocolate Bark and Minty Matcha Nanaimo bars to mention just a few.
Although Superfoods 24/7 might not be to everyone’s tastes, there is no denying that the recipes are of a healthy nature. Anybody considering the addition of a healthier cookbook to their collection, or recipes that can offer something different should definitely have a closer look at this book.
Be aware though that for some ingredients you might need to look past your regular supermarket. Having said this most ingredients should be easily obtainable at your local health store, or through an online equivalent.
Definitely most suited to the health conscious and those who like experimenting with their cooking.
