Gartelmann Wines is based in the Lovedale area of the Hunter Valley. Here they gather together premium grapes from around the Hunter, Mudgee, Rhystone and Orange regions of NSW to create their award-winning wines.

After 11 years of growing grapes and making wine, the Gartelmann family sold their 40 acre vineyard in 2007 and turned their focus to winemaking and their friendly cellar door, with great success.

The current Gartelmann Wines range includes a multi award-winning semillon and shiraz, verdehlo, chardonnay, merlot, cabernet and petit verdot along with a dessert wine and liqueur muscat.

Here's tasting notes for three of their fine wines:

 

Gartelmann 2016 Jessica Verdehlo

Named after Jan Gartelman's mother, Jessica,

Vineyard and terroir: the soil and conditions in the Hunter Valley produce a Verdelho that is unique to this area. The vines are on sandy clay loam over limestone, with a slight slope, allowing heavy rains to run off.

Tasting notes: this wine is like a Pine Lime Splice without the ice cream but with some alcohol ! The nose is a rich delight of pineapple, lime and passionfruit, tingly and delicious. So typical of this wonderful variety in the Hunter Valley. With just a touch of fruity sweetness on the palate and some gently balancing acid, this wine is light in structure yet sumptuous in its flavours.

Food matching: a perfect partner for seafood with spice, or a zappy Thai stir fry? Think salmon with sweet chilli, prawns with a soy dipping sauce.

Vintage: the forecast for Hunter 2016 was outstanding, and then it all went down hill, with 90 mm on 22-23 December and 220 mm 4-7 January. A recipe for disaster. Fortunately the clay soil and slight slope on the Verdelho block meant that most of the water ran off. There is no logical explanation, but the wine was better than in previous vintages – more delicate but also more flavour.

Cellaring: drink now as a young wine or cellar up to late 2017.

Accolades: Cairns Wine Show 2016 – Top wine, silver medal.

Alc/vol: 13.05%

Gartelmann 2016 Veronica Rosé

Named after Jorg Gartelmann's granddaughter, Veronica.

Vineyard and terroir: equal portions of warm climate Shiraz grapes from the Hunter Valley and cool climate shiraz from Orange has added some complexity to the wine.

Tasting notes:  the nose speaks of its cool climate origins with young red roses, very fresh strawberries, and a hint of Turkish delight. These flavours carry deliciously onto the palate. Tight appley acid is the defining thread, with a delightfully light, dry finish, and an after-taste of summer berries (there’s the Hunter shining through).

Food matching: try this with creamy garlic mushrooms over tiny gnocchi, gourmet pizzas drenched in fetta, or baked salmon with aioli. It sings of warm evenings and fun days outdoors, but it also whispers comfort food and cosy nights in with the footy and pasta!

Vintage: Orange 2016 was an excellent vintage, producing very full bodied wines. The Hunter vintage was very wet, producing lighter reds. Blending these two components has given the wine the right style, body and colour

Cellaring: Drink now whilst young and fresh 2016-2017

Accolades: Cairns Wine Show 2016 – Silver Medal (51 pts).

Gartelmann 2014 Joey Merlot

Named after Jan Gartelmann's grandson, Joey.

The region: the Bordeaux variety fruit comes entirely from a single vineyard in the Orange wine region, but a little bit north of the township, often missing the late autumn rains.

Terroir: Orange is a cool climate region very suited to Merlot, with the vineyard at 630m altitude, avoiding the hot temperatures in the summer resulting in a slow ripening season, adding to the complexity of the wine. The vineyard block is on reddish brown clay-loam mixed with sandstone and ironstones, providing good drainage and mineral input.

Tasting notes:if you like your merlot complex, luxurious, with masses of ripe fruit flavour, intensely deep and rich ... you are about to enter Nirvana. The nose says ripe cranberries (or is it raspberries?) and Lapsing Souchong tea, overlaid with excellent caramelised oak. The palate says spicy pepper charcoal-cured meats, more berries in a cedar box, tight yet soft acid and the gentlest of persistent tannin. The finish says “stay with me baby, we’ll have some good cheese, and a roast duckling... and see what happens...” (said in a deeply resonant, gravelly voice)

Food matching: good cheese, roast duckling, and always pork.

Vintage: Orange had below average rainfall in January, heavier rain 2 days in the middle of February and on 1st & 2nd March, then lighter rainfall until 27th March. It started raining half an hour after harvest started, picking stopped, and the vineyard block was blow dried when the rain stopped. Marvellous. We got an awesome Merlot.

Cellaring: drink from 2016, great from 2019, or cellar until 2024.

Accolades: Trophy 2015 Orange Wine Show, and Trophy for people’s choice.

Alc/vol: 14.2%
