For 25 years Michele Cranston has been cooking and food styling. During this time she has set up an acclaimed cafe and has written about food for various magazines; she is currently writing for the Australian Women’s Weekly. She is the author of twelve previous cookbooks in the marie claire series (see linkes below).

A Simple Table is all about delicious food kept simple. It avoids recipes that could be considered pompous and endeavours to deliver those that answer questions like "What should I make for dinner?"  and "What’s easy?"

The book is designed around how we eat and who we are eating with. There are a little over 100 ‘uncomplicated’ recipes provided for everyday of the week, every occasion and every mood.

The cookbook is divided into numerous sections; Two bowls, Four plates, One pot, Weekend platters, On the side, Pretty spoons and Tea cups and cake plates. The intention is to ensure all elements of family mealtimes are covered.

The meals are often nutritious and delicious, like the Poached Chicken and Mango Salad; the Green Pea Salad with Ricotta and Prosciutto; the Avocado, Bacon and Watercress Salad, and the San Choy Bau to name a few.

In line with the author’s philosophy the book is in part designed for parents, with many meals both easy and made with children in mind. The kids will love the Meatballs with Fresh Tomato Sauce; Ocean Trout and Corn Fritters (gotta get those omegas into them!); Lamb Skewers and Tzatziki; Cottage Pie, and Chocolate and Chestnut Mousse.

Some other standout recipes are the Coleslaw with Lemon-mustard Mayonnaise;  the Chocolate, Cranberry and Coconut Slice; Buttery Potato Bake, and the Aromatic Butterflied Chicken.

There is certainly a meal for every event and mood. Lots of different ingredients are used across the recipes and many are hearty and refreshing – perfect for the summer holidays.

Overall it has lots of appeal for parents who want to step their cooking up a notch without becoming overly complicated.

A Simple Table is published in Australia by Murdoch Books (Sydney, 2015; sc, 256pp) and retails in Australia for $39.99
