Henschke's Hill of Grace Shiraz is has been celebrated for decades and now its history, and that of its winemaking family is told in in a book sure to become a classic Australian wine book, Hill of Grace: 150 Years of Henschke under the Southern Stars.

Assisted by striking modern images by Dragan Radocaj and historic lithographs of early paintings, author Fiona MacDonald takes us from an escape from Prussia in 1841 to the Barossa of today. That's 150 years of tending vines and making wine done by the Henschke family and, along with its phenomenally successful Hill of Grace, a tale worth delving into.

Like the gnarled pre-phylloxera vines planted in 1860, the family too has been resilient through droughts and economic turbulence with the sixth generation now working those very vines.

Hill of Grace is a living connection to early Barossa as many of the colonial vineyards have been lost of over time. Surprisingly, this eminent vineyard is small, just four hectares but it produces an almost magical shiraz that is acclaimed world over.

Hill of Grace: 150 years of Henschke under the Southern Skies is no dry history tome, but a book beautifully written making it easy and enjoyable to read. Start at the front or dip into the distant family story, life amongst the vines today or read the tasting notes for Hill of Grace shiraz that stretch from 1885 to 2012.

It's certainly a singular single vineyard.
